The Role of the Embryologist in Animal Cloning

The team behind any assisted reproduction process in animals is composed, at a minimum, of a veterinarian specialized in reproduction and an embryologist. In the case of cloning, there is also a research team involved.

The veterinarian is responsible for monitoring the mare’s general health before, during, and after pregnancy; performing ultrasounds to track the foal’s development; and setting the protocols for each stage of the process. This is also the person clients consult when any issues or anomalies arise during the mare’s pregnancy.

So, what does the embryologist do? This professional, whom we almost never get to meet in person, is a biologist specialized in assisted reproduction, and their work is the foundation of the entire process. Put simply, the embryologist is the one in charge of the cloning process, the one who performs the ‘magic’ so you can have a replica of your favorite animal.

Cloning differs from conventional assisted reproduction techniques in that it is an asexual reproduction technique using a somatic cell and an enucleated egg.

Functions of the Embryologist in Animal Cloning

  • Analyze, culture, and develop somatic cells containing the DNA
  • Extract the nucleus from an egg
  • Introduce the nuclear DNA into the enucleated egg
  • Monitor embryo formation
  • Culture the embryo and supervise its development
  • Classify final embryos according to quality
  • Oversee embryo preservation
  • Ensure optimal laboratory environmental conditions
  • Calibrate equipment
  • Vitrify and devitrify embryos

Undoubtedly, the embryologist is involved in almost every phase of the process. The work of a skilled embryology professional is essential to the success of cloning. That’s why at Ovohorse and Ovoclone, we have the best team of embryologists who, alongside our veterinarians and researchers, ensure everything runs smoothly so you can enjoy a foal that is the spitting image of your exceptional animal—elegant, powerful, talented, or capable.

At Ovohorse and Ovoclone, we are backed by numerous awards and recognitions, quality certifications, and high success rates in assisted reproduction.
